The Land of Fire & Ice is Calling you

The Land of Fire & Ice Retreat is a spiritual destination retreat in which every part of your experience is meant to bring powerful and rapid transformation.

This retreat is not intended to be a travel bucket list of Iceland, rather a thoughtfully curated retreat experience designed to move you through all the layers of spiritual growth required to facilitate the rapid growth and transformation of your soul in one of the most wild and magical locales of our world.

Every detail has been crafted to enhance and cultivate a deep dive into the wildest and unrefined, yet most powerful, parts of ourselves.

Why Iceland?

Iceland is called the Land of Fire & Ice for good reason, it is an island of extremes, where some of Europe’s biggest glaciers cozy up to some of the continent’s hottest volcanic springs.

The island’s ruggedly beautiful mountainous regions, impressive lava flows, smoking volcanic vents, and roaring waterfalls seem older than time, the perfect battlefield-like setting for some fantastic stories of immortal gods and magical ore. In reality, Iceland is still a baby in geologic terms, formed by volcanic eruptions just 20 million years ago.  It is one of the most volcanically active places on Earth, with 32 active volcanic systems erupting every four years on average. Iceland owes its existence to its unique geological setting. Iceland still growing today with its magma plume rising from underneath the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Ridge precisely where two tectonic plates, Eurasia and North America, are spreading apart.

Volcanic fire isn’t the only elemental force shaping the island. The massive movements of the Ice plays a key role. Less than 8,000 years ago, geologists believe the entire island was buried beneath miles of ice. As these massive glaciers melted away, they carved Iceland’s remarkable steep-sided valleys and fjords, long, narrow glacial valleys that have been flooded by the sea. Today, ice continues to carve and smooth the land. About ten percent of the island is covered by glaciers. It is where Fire and Ice meet, wonderful things happen.

Iceland is the place where supernatural and mythological beings abound, the giants, trolls, dwarves, elves and dragons were never fully forced into the hidden realm. Its a place where the veil is thin that protects the Hidden and the line between reality and magical is blurred. It is a place where the magic has not been forgotten and the land itself is divinely designed to inspire our growth and transformation.

It is the land of fire and ice where life begins where all the ingredients exist to build and create. It is a place to honor and reflect on where we come from and what makes us who we are, our ancestors and our past sojourns on this planet.  It's a place to let go, to dissolve, and rebuild.

Dragons of Iceland

Really Sierra, why Iceland?

Well only Iceland can offer us all the nature we need to accomplish our mission. And most importantly Dragon energy simply is bountiful in this rugged wilderness.

Since ancient times, the dragon was an important creature and symbol associated with Norse According to the Icelandic Sagas, back in the days of the Vikings, there were many protective spirits running around Iceland. The dragon is actually one of four spirits that supposedly guarded Iceland. You’ll see a dragon, a bull, a vulture, and a giant as the shield bearers on the country’s official coat of arms.

“Dreki”, the dragons of the Vikings, were symbols of chaos, destruction, and death, but not in an inherently evil way, dragons brought balance to the world. Vikings saw the universal existence as a cycle of birth and destruction, they believed for there to be creation and life in the world, there must also be destruction and death. Dreki was what kept the universe in balance.

For the Vikings, dragons were an important symbol, they were carved into their ships to strike fear into the hearts of enemies. At home however, dragons were also used in jewelry, paintings, and accessories, as symbols of strength and balance.

Meals Made with An Icelandic Flare

The food in Iceland is as wild and diverse as its landscape. Hardy root vegetables, wild berries, lamb, and seafood form the backbone of the Icelandic plate. Traditional methods of smoking, drying, pickling, and fermenting create some incredible unique flavors especially when combined with their special sauces and creams.

You will even find the opportunity to taste Rye bread baked in a geothermal bakery, where it is baked underground in hot volcanic regions. Oh my, My tastebuds cannot wait!

And as important to so many in our community, much of the food in Iceland is grown organic and with sustainability in mind.

Can’t eat this or that? Vegan, vegetarian, gluten or dairy free? No problem in Iceland – we’re happy to accommodate any of your food preferences.

I am ready to believe in dragons and all things magical!

SIT AND CONVERSE WITH ONE OF THE TROLLS OF LEGEND AT REYNISFJARA BLACK SAND BEACH OF THE SOUTH COAST OF ICELAND.

“This is a land where your house can be destroyed by something you can’t see (earthquakes), where the wind can knock you off your feet, where the smell of sulphur from your taps tells you there is invisible fire not far below your feet, where the northern lights make the sky the biggest television screen in the world, and where hot springs and glaciers ‘talk’.

In short, everyone is aware that the land is alive, and one can say that the stories of hidden people and the need to work carefully with them reflects an understanding that the land demands respect.”

— Terry Gunnell- Professor of Folklore University of Iceland

Iceland: Need to Know Info

DAYLIGHT

In late January there is about 7 hours of daylight in Iceland. For example on the 31st of January, the sun rises at around 10:12am and sets at around 5:11pm. This will make for some great sleeping time, however, be prepared to start each day in the darkness. Most days we will leave between 7-9am in order to travel in the darkness to make the most of our daylight hours on location at the sights in Iceland. Traveling this way is ideal as it gives us more opportunities to see the Northern Lights!

WEATHER

Despite being one of the coldest months of the year, Iceland’s January temperature averages around 31°F. Not as cold as you might expect, with Reykjavik typically experiencing milder temperatures than New York City. Most people are very surprised to learn that the Iceland climate is much milder than they envisioned. Also its helpful to know that the southern areas of Iceland, which we will be travelling, are often slightly warmer than the northern regions.

Overall the snowfall slows in January creating a fairly dry month as far as Iceland weather goes. But make no mistake, it can certainly be cold and snowy. Iceland's weather in January can be notoriously fickle and its commonly said in Iceland “you can experience all four seasons in a day here”. The reason things aren’t quite as icy in Iceland is the volcanic activity and the warm currents of the Gulf Stream coming down the coast bringing just enough warmth to offset the icy glaciers and snow.

Tours are still running across the country, some of which are best in the depths of winter. January visitors see all the best of Iceland with less crowds and the optimal time of year to visit to the ice caves and see the northern lights.

ÞORRABLÓT

We will be in Iceland for the beginning of Þorrablót, or Thorrablot, a cultural festival that takes place from the end of January to the second half of February, based on the lunar month of Thorri on the old Norse calendar. The ancestors are thought to be close enough to share a meal with their loved ones. During Þorrablót, Icelanders honor their ancestors and their culture by dining on various food that have been eaten in Iceland through the centuries.

Some of the traditional food items that are eaten might not seem appetizing to outsiders, but they were necessary for Iceland's survival for over a 1000 years. Some of these food items include hakarl (fermented shark), svid (boiled sheep's head), or hrutspungar (ram's testicles). Feeling adventurous or disgusted? Not to worry there is also some great tasting traditional food such smoked lamb (hangikjot), rye bread (rugbraud), or tasty stockfish (hardfiskur) which goes great with butter.

The timing of this retreat is perfect all around for an amazing life-changing journey to the Land of Fire & Ice.

LEARN FROM THE ICELANDIC HORSES FOUND ACROSS THE ISLAND- PERFECTLY ADAPTED TO ICELANDS RUGGED TERRAIN - SMALL YET MIGHTY, AND FIESTY WITH A HEAVY DOLLOP OF SWEETNESS.

Simple What to Bring List

For our outdoor adventures, we recommend wearing lots of removable layers. A pair of good waterproof hiking boots are a MUST. Also wear good wool or synthetic hiking socks; we advise against cotton. A nice wool sweater can really help you stay nice and toasty.

Make sure you are waterproof for all your outermost layers from top to bottom. Staying dry is key to having a great experience.

Pack a LARGE water bottle that you fill up and drink from constantly. It’s vital to stay hydrated on our retreats. Glass is not recommended.

Do be prepared to go outdoors in all weather. If you have an aversion to rain and wind, consider that a retreat to Iceland might not be the right fit for you.

You will receive a much more detailed list closer to the retreat.

Make it More…

If you would like to make it an epic adventure - come earlier or stay later for some personal exploration of Iceland – some really incredible places and activities you may wish to consider:

Spend some time in Reykjavík, a hub of culture and arts, with numerous museums, galleries, and music venues to explore. The city is also known for its vibrant nightlife and amazing street food. Reykjavík is also home to many unique and quirky landmarks, such as Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa concert hall, and Perlan. And for some unusual local flavor consider a visit to the Icelandic Phallological Museum to see the worlds largest penis collection, or unleash your inner Viking with Mink Viking Portrait, or a magical walking tour experience with Your Friend in Reykjavik. So many curious things to try we really do advise coming in a day early to start off your adventure with some serious laughter!

The Blue Lagoon is close to the airport and offers an experience not to be missed. The warm and mineral-rich waters are known for their therapeutic properties.

Its easy to add some tours to your visit from Reykjavik, must dos are the whale-watching tours and the Icelandic horse riding tours.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula nearby is also rich in history and culture, with many small fishing villages offering a glimpse into traditional Icelandic life. The seafood here is reputed to be the best ever!

Reykjanes Peninsula is also home to several charming fishing villages, and Reykjanesviti, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland.  The Bridge Between Continents is right here, a footbridge spans the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Reykjanes Peninsula is close to Reykjavík but do your research as this is where the recent lava flows have occurred.

You will likely want to avoid Northern Iceland locations and many other parts in Iceland due to the time of year we will be visiting so make sure to do your research!

Iceland is calling and I’m already packing!

A Year of Magic was created so we are ready to connect in a deep and powerful way with all that is magical in Iceland.

This incredible program is designed to be a perfect preparatory program for our Land of Fire & Ice Retreat.

From magical unicorns and fairies to fearsome giants and trolls, mythical creatures have captured our imagination since the dawn of time. Every culture and tradition has tales of wild magical creatures in their local myths and legends.

Some magical creatures and stories can be found in a similar representation worldwide, as they are rooted in our general human experience. Other magical creatures and stories are specific to a particular region, reflecting the importance of particular teachings and values to that local community. The mythical creatures of these stories uphold morality, enforce taboos, connect to divinity, warn against dangers, entertain, reflect the things beyond our control and in the unknown.

There are numerous theories and evidence of sightings that lead one to believe certain mythical animals may really exist. Some theories talk about a mythical existence in a parallel universe. While these theories have not been proven, in the lens of our shamanic world, magical creatures most definitely do exist. Personally I have found when conversing about the magical realms, literally almost everyone has an incredible magical experience to share.

In this program each month we will learn about and form a connection with a particular mythical creature through a shamanic journey experience to receive their protection, messages and spiritual guidance. We will explore the symbolic meanings of these mythical creatures, including interpreting the lessons, virtues, or warnings that they have to offer us in the moment. We will look at the common themes, such as the struggle between good and evil, the exploration of the unknown, and the importance of human values that are shared in the myths and legends of the mythical creature of the month.

Each month we will create a special alter, using herbs, flowers, scents, crystals, and other natural materials to enhance our connection with the magical creature of our focus. Learn what invites these energies into your dreams and visions and take home a special gift to create your own magical alter at home.

In this year long series, you will form a deep personal connection and understanding of the magical realm and its amazingly unique and powerful creatures and discover how to bring the magic into your everyday!

Offered by Sierra. $77 per class. This program is in person only.

This series will be the first Sat of every month 6:30-9pm. Registration is required.

While it is encouraged to commit to the entire program, it is not a requirement. I trust you will be called to participate for the magical creatures that resonate with you. The blessings that unfold in this process are far beyond the limits of our mind.

It will not be required to complete this program to attend the retreat but it is strongly recommended to help you to have a deeper understanding of the energies that we will be working with on the retreat. You also do not need to join us in Iceland to participate in The Year of Magic.

Rather than announcing our magical creature each month, we leave it a surprise so you can truly listen to your heart when asking if the month’s creature is right for you. The only exception to this is:

DRAGONS will be December 7th. If you are coming to Iceland you will want to be there to start building your relationship with the dragons!
